Lara Jade

Lara Jade started her own photography business at the age of seventeen and found she was shooting for portrait clients through the UK. Jade is influenced by past and present style; she is inspired by stories and narratives either in her personal work or commercial campaigns. Jade is deeply into elements of influential style, film noir, old masters in painting and photography, romanticism and untouched beauty.

Lara Jade says: “I was fortunate enough to discover my interest in photography at the early age of fourteen. I began by shooting conceptual photography and experimental self-portraiture to hone my skills in my suburban hometown in the West Midlands, England."

The ‘untouched beauty’ is one of the reasons why I chose Lara Jade as one of my focuses. I want to be able to express my personal views on models trying to please society in my photography and for society to except no matter if the model is skinny or plus size, she is beautiful. These image's are similar to Camillia Akrans but in the sense of 'airbrushing and vibrancy.' There still is the slight different edge to these image and they are more theatrical. Someone like Lara Jade has had projects for Vogue so the idea of posed images is a neccesity. Howver the second row of image's shows a minority of her style of work. Portraiture and using the form of a women's beauty to capure emotions.

Image Analysis:

This is an image I spotted whilst gathering information on Lara Jade. It hasn't been listed as part of a collection but it does have some value to it. I chose this image because of the simplicity in contrast to Paul Morel it is similar in that context, however this image isn't even high end fashion photography. My initial thoughts when I seen this image was why has she got her back towards the camera? My eye focuses on her back bone, creating a shadow following the line down her back. The emotional effect the image reflect is 'isolation' or even 'shyness' the way her back is turned shows can reflect her insecurity. She still shows the side view of her face. The arrangement of the image how the model is placed to touch the edge of the camera makes her look almost fragile as if she is about to just break. The lighting used is in the studio grasping that grey shaded background, the image is done in a wide depth of field so nothing is more focused than others. I think the photograph was taken at this angle because of the aim to show her bare body and lack of confidence. The contrast in the image does differ the mood making it tranquil, the colour of her hair is adding to the contrast. The brown hair gives an edgy effect to the image; making it mysterious. The small detail in which you can see her jaw line above her shoulders is incredible; as is the composition.

The image lacks insecurity within itself- the model is holding herself in her arms and all you can see is her skin- my adaption of the image is that she is struggling to come to terms with what she her body is like, she maybe is ashamed. The way her hair falls naturally onto one side decreases the theatrical look, which Lara Jade focuses on in most shoots. The black background helps focus on the model and as opposed to my first choice of image- where the image is grey and the whole image is an importance. In this image the model and her insecurity is the significant matter which is what I want to adapt in my image.

The arrangement of this image is the individual being almost enclosed in a box. I think the photographer placed the image like this showcasing the mood of the image; isolation. The lighting has been studio based and be faced towards the individual with a Black and White layer, which refocuses what we look at the image and get a feeling of raw emotion. The depth of field is wide supporting the black and white layer, where the viewers look at everything in the image. I seemed to notice her arms being wrapped around her body which could perhaps mean her insecurities is being held in, she is unclothed which supports this option. The black background almost swallows the model as it merges in with her hair and arms from the side, adjusting the mood slightly. The model is posed but has a natural subtle look which also shows some tranquillity like the previous image.

Response:

f/14, an exposure time of ISO-100 and the focal length at 45 mm
This image was taken in the studio with two over head lights. The reason behind my response was because I intended to add my concept idea of showing the insecurities of a woman. Even though the model is captured naked nonetheless she is hiding herself, her stomach, stretch marks; things that she thinks aren't good enough or what 'society' said isn't. The idea of becoming so obsessed with what you do and how you look is enforced so much with magazines, social media and even words. I feel as though when look at this image, the model literally is crying for some help, because she has to hide her self. Adapting Lara Jade's work and my idea worked well together.

This image was taken in the studio with only the ride hand side light on and the grey shadow effect was created on Photoshop. The reason I responded like this is similar to the first idea. The insecurity, how she turned away her back and has a her single back bone creating such a sharp line and shadows. The shadows change the emotional effect of the image and it's that sense of wanting to see her features from the front.
